"The Adventures of Jerry Muskrat" by Thornton W. Burgess is a captivating tale set in the natural world of the Smiling Pool and the Laughing Brook. The story begins with Jerry Muskrat and his friends noticing a strange phenomenon: the water levels in their beloved Smiling Pool and Laughing Brook are mysteriously decreasing. This unusual occurrence prompts a gathering of the local animal community, including Billy Mink, Little Joe Otter, and Grandfather Frog, to discuss the potential dangers posed by Farmer Brown's boy and his traps. Despite their initial suspicions, the animals soon realize that the traps are not the cause of their water woes. Determined to uncover the truth, the group embarks on a journey upstream to find the source of the problem. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and distractions, but their perseverance leads them to a surprising discovery: a dam has been constructed, creating a new pond in the Green Forest. This dam, built by an unknown architect, is the reason for the reduced water flow downstream. As the animals ponder the implications of this new pond, Grandfather Frog suggests that Jerry Muskrat's big cousin from the North might be responsible for the construction. The story concludes with the animals contemplating their next steps and the potential impact of the dam on their ecosystem. Through this adventure, Burgess weaves a narrative that highlights themes of curiosity, community, and the interconnectedness of nature.
