Der Circle von Dave Eggers ist ein Roman, der sich schnell liest und lange im Kopf bleibt. Die Geschichte ist spannend umgesetzt und regt dazu an, das eigene Verhalten in sozialen Medien kritisch zu hinterfragen. Was teilen wir, warum tun wir es – und wem nützt es eigentlich?
Im Zentrum steht eine Hauptfigur, deren Entwicklung gut nachvollziehbar ist. Schritt für Schritt verändert sie sich innerhalb eines Systems, das Transparenz, Vernetzung und permanente Sichtbarkeit als höchste Werte verkauft. Gerade diese Entwicklung ist eine der Stärken des Buches: Sie wirkt realistisch und erschreckend plausibel. Gleichzeitig hätte ich mir hier noch mehr Tiefe gewünscht. Manche innere Konflikte werden angerissen, aber nicht ausgefochten.
Auch bei den Nebenfiguren bleibt der Roman eher an der Oberfläche. Viele Charaktere erfüllen klar definierte Rollen, ohne komplex zu werden. Das nimmt der Geschichte etwas von ihrer emotionalen Wucht. Gerade angesichts der grossen Themen wäre hier mehr Vielschichtigkeit möglich gewesen.
Trotzdem packt Der Circle. Die Geschichte liest sich flüssig, bleibt unangenehm nah an der Gegenwart und lässt einen nicht einfach aussteigen, sobald es unbequem wird. Gerade das macht den Roman stark. Er zwingt zur Auseinandersetzung und bleibt genau deshalb im Kopf.
