"Ruth Fielding Down in Dixie" by Alice B. Emerson follows the adventures of Ruth Fielding and her friend Helen Cameron as they embark on a journey from New York to Old Point Comfort, Virginia. The narrative begins with the girls boarding a steamer, where they encounter a peculiar girl who seems out of place. This girl, with her odd appearance and behavior, piques their curiosity. As the steamer departs, the girls learn that the police are searching for a boy disguised in women's clothing, believed to be on board. Ruth and Helen suspect the strange girl might be the boy in question, but they decide not to interfere without concrete evidence. Throughout the voyage, the girls experience various incidents, including a confrontation with a stern woman who accuses them of stealing her ticket. Despite the accusation, Ruth maintains her composure and denies any wrongdoing. The journey is filled with beautiful sights, such as the sunrise over the ocean and the passing of notable landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Capes of Virginia. As the steamer approaches its destination, the girls continue to ponder the identity of the mysterious passenger. Ruth is particularly concerned about a boy named Curly Smith, who might be in trouble back home. The narrative combines elements of mystery, friendship, and the excitement of travel, capturing the essence of a youthful adventure in the early 20th century.
