"The Moving Picture Girls Snowbound" by Laura Lee Hope is a captivating narrative that follows the DeVere family as they navigate the challenges and adventures of working in the silent film industry. The story begins with Alice and Ruth DeVere, two sisters who are concerned about their father, Mr. Hosmer DeVere, a veteran actor who has lost his voice due to a throat condition. This loss has forced him to shift from the traditional stage to acting in silent films, a change that brings both opportunities and challenges. The plot thickens when Mr. DeVere is confronted by Dan Merley, a man who claims that Mr. DeVere owes him five hundred dollars. Despite Mr. DeVere's insistence that he has already repaid the debt, Merley threatens legal action, causing significant distress to the family. The situation is further complicated by Merley's sudden accident, which raises questions about his motives and the legitimacy of his claims. Amidst these personal challenges, the DeVere sisters continue to work in the film industry, participating in various productions that require them to adapt to different roles and settings. The narrative provides a glimpse into the early days of the film industry, highlighting the technical and creative aspects of producing silent films. The story also explores themes of trust, integrity, and resilience as the DeVere family faces adversity with determination and support from friends like Russ Dalwood, a young moving picture operator who plays an intermediary role in helping them navigate their troubles. As the story unfolds, the DeVere family must find a way to prove Mr. DeVere's innocence and resolve the financial dispute, all while continuing to pursue their careers in the burgeoning world of silent cinema. The novel captures the spirit of an era when the film industry was still in its infancy, offering readers a blend of drama, humor, and insight into the lives of those who helped shape the entertainment landscape.
