"Approaching a Gospel as a "story," i.e., a narrative whole, is widely used by contemporary scholarly commentators. But it is not familiar to many audiences. There are several reasons for this. Catholic audiences are accustomed to hearing passages excerpted from one of the four Gospels at Mass, or within the context of other liturgical settings. The location of the passage within the literary whole of the story (its literary context) is seldom recognized. Similarly, there are "favourite passages" that appear regularly: e.g., Peter's confession in Matt 16:13-20 (generally without the narrative conclusion of vv. 21-23), and the final commission of the risen Jesus in 28:16-20. Where do these famous passages come in the story? How are they part of a broader picture of the Gospel's presentation of God and God's action in and through Jesus? The proposed book would focus upon the unfolding of the narrative, section by section, seeking to trace a single-minded presentation of God, Jesus Christ, the call to discipleship and the Christian Church, articulated as the story unfolds"--
