In "Tom Swift and His Wireless Message," Tom Swift, a young inventor, receives a telegram from Hosmer Fenwick, a fellow inventor in Philadelphia, requesting his assistance with a new electric airship that refuses to take flight. Encouraged by his father, Tom decides to help Fenwick and plans to travel to Philadelphia in his monoplane, the BUTTERFLY. Accompanied by his eccentric friend, Mr. Damon, who is known for his habit of blessing everything, Tom embarks on the journey. The narrative begins with Tom's encounter with Eradicate Sampson, a local handyman, who delivers the telegram. Tom's day is further complicated by a humorous incident involving Mary Nestor, a friend who is in desperate need of a cook. After helping Mary, Tom has a confrontation with Andy Foger, a local bully, which results in Andy being knocked out due to his own actions. The next day, Tom and Mr. Damon set off in the BUTTERFLY. The flight is mostly smooth until the engine unexpectedly stalls, forcing Tom to perform a daring vol-plane maneuver to safely land the monoplane in Philadelphia. The story highlights Tom's ingenuity, bravery, and willingness to assist others, setting the stage for further adventures as he aids Fenwick with his airship.
