Reynold A. Nicholson kommt vor allem die Bedeutung zu, dass er sich bereits sehr früh mit dem Sufismus intensiv und akademisch auseinandergesetzt hat und diesen zu verstehen versucht hat - nicht immer gingen schließlich westliche Wissenschaftler weitestgehend unbefangen an die Materie heran. Aus diesem Grunde ist seine Darstellung schon alleine aus geschichtlichen Gründen, um sich ein Bilde über die Aufnahme des Sufismus in Europa zu machen, durchaus empfehlenswert. Jedoch krankt das Buch an typischen Erscheinungen, die auf sein bereits recht hohes Alter zurückzuführen sind: So ist konstant die Rede von einem "Pantheismus", der sich im Sufismus widerspiegle, was jedoch zurückzuweisen ist. Insbesondere Bücher, die aus einer Sufi-Perspektive geschrieben sind, weisen hierauf nachdrücklich hin. In Summe ist Nicholsons Werk daher zwar als Einführung zu empfehlen, jedoch mit Vorbehalten. Anfänger, die sich nicht verwirren lassen wollen, greifen daher besser zu einem der Werke von Seyyed Hossein Nasr oder William Chittick.
