After watching the Dark Matter Series on Apple TV, I was already a fan of Blake Crouch. Upgrade is a thriller for all biochemistry, and molecular biologist fans. If you are interested in gene editing and biohacking, you will love this. It has kind of the same premise than the book “The Dark Fields” from Alan Glynn, which lead also to the film “Limitless” with Bradley Cooper. In Upgrade, the story is about humans that are upgraded. Suddenly, they are superior to “normal” humans in every aspect possible, like intelligence, agility, stamina, strength etc. The main question is, if they are still the same species and if this upgrade should be released on all humans worldwide….and at what cost?

The journey into the distant realms of science fiction was fun once again. The story about the agent Logan Ramsey opens up a world of science that I found particularly exciting. Something happened on his last mission, but he can’t quite understand what is happening to him. I immediately felt connected to the main character, I found the scientific topics very interesting and understandable. Ethics and evolution are other aspects that are incorporated into the story. Upgrade is a story that stays with you long after you finish reading it and makes you think. Science fiction is not usually my cup of tea, but Blake Crouch’s stories are so excitingly written, the science so interesting that you have only one choice, to immerse yourself in the story.
