Chanakya was the teacher and advisor of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Mauryan Empire. He is traditionally identified as Kautilya or Vishnugupta. Chanakya was also an economist, philosopher, and jurist. He is known to have authored the Arthashastra, an ancient Indian political and economic treatise, and Chanakya Neeti, a collection of aphorisms. There are legends in various sources of Indian tradition which provide information about Chanakya's life.Chanakya is believed to have destroyed the Nanda Empire in order to enthrone Chandragupta Maurya as the king of Magadha. His role was vital in the establishment of the Mauryan Empire. After serving Chandragupta, he became the chief advisor to his son, Bindusara.Chanakya has been called the Indian Machiavelli by Jawaharlal Nehru in his book The Discovery of India. His strategies and ideologies continue to remain relevant and popular even today.
