Das zweite Meisterwerk von den Fitzgeralds (der sich für Ideen durchaus bei seiner Frau bedient hat, aber dies ist eine andere Geschichte...)
Die Divers sind eine komplizierte Familie und leben exzentrisch vor sich hin, aber die glanzvolle Fassade bröckelt, wie mit Hammer und Meißel bearbeitet, Stück für Stück, Seite für Seite ab.
Richard 'Dick' Diver und seine Frau Nicole, autobiographisch stellvertretend für Francis und Zelda selbst, feiern die besten und geschmackvollsten Parties an der französischen Riviera, ein junger Filmstar rutscht in die Ehe hinein, ein Duell findet statt, etc,...
Mehr möchte ich an dieser Stelle nicht verraten, bis auf das die Erzähltechnik und Form doch überraschend gelungen ist, entgegen aller Kritiken, die ich davor gelesen habe.
Das langsame und zermürbende Up and Down der Divers ist mit so viel psychologischer Tiefe, Traurigkeit und Tristesse verbunden, dass man das Buch gar nicht beenden möchte.
Ein Buch, dass mich wie Emily Brontë's erschütterndes Meisterwerk „Wuthering Heights“ fortan begleiten wird und definitiv bald in der empfehlenswerten dt. Neuübersetzung von W. Lutz (dtv) nochmal gelesen wird.
