"The Ranch Girls at Rainbow Lodge" by Margaret Vandercook is a captivating story set in the vast, open landscapes of Wyoming. The narrative follows Jacqueline "Jack" Ralston and her sisters, Frieda and their cousin Jean, who manage the Rainbow Ranch after the death of their parents. The story begins with Jack getting lost on the plains and inadvertently crossing into the territory of their rivals, the Nortons. This encounter sets the stage for a series of events that test the girls' courage and resourcefulness. The plot thickens when the girls discover a runaway Indian girl named Olilie, who is fleeing from her oppressive life with an Indian woman named Laska. The ranch girls, driven by compassion, decide to help Olilie, offering her refuge at their ranch. This act of kindness leads to a confrontation with Laska, who demands Olilie's return. The girls stand firm, determined to protect their new friend. Throughout the story, the themes of friendship, bravery, and the struggle for independence are explored. The girls' bond is tested as they navigate the challenges of running a ranch and dealing with external threats. Their interactions with the local community, including the mysterious English visitor Frank Kent, add depth to the narrative, highlighting the cultural and social dynamics of the time. Margaret Vandercook weaves a tale that is both adventurous and heartwarming, capturing the spirit of the American West and the resilience of young women determined to carve out their own destinies.
