The Haunting of Hill House

As with the last book that I read by Jackson, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, what made this book so fascinating in my eyes was the main character. We see the events in this book through the perspective of Eleanor. Though in the beginning she seemed normal enough, as the story progressed I started to question her reliability and sanity more and more. Nevertheless, I found her highly relatable and I guess that’s what made this book so unsettling. While reading it I was completely immersed. The atmosphere Jackson created sucked me in and kept me turning the pages until late at night. Which, by the way, might not be the best time to read this if you are easily scared. After finishing the book, I was left with kind of a stale feeling, but not in a bad way. It didn’t end with a big twist or revelation. Instead the ending felt very natural and ruggedly nudged me back to reality. In my opinion, the way Jackson manages to switch between the supernatural and blunt reality is what made this book stand out from other haunted house stories. I would highly recommend experiencing it yourself.
