Like a story told with cause and effect, where backwards and forwards are one and the same, the author traces connections between now and then to discover ideas coming from somewhere else - nature, God, angels, the unconscious, call it what you will - something communicates through dreams and things. If a person is observant, such communications provide thrills and serenity.
And Then isn't an analysis of chance or the mathematics of probability associated with coincidence nor is it about positive thinking or the power of the mind to manipulate reality to achieve personal desires. This is beyond that. This is about the wonder felt in seeing something amazing and in knowing that it is more than just one of those things.
Like a fractal zoom where self-similar patterns appear the same from near as from far, the infinite is in the finite and the extraordinary is in the ordinary. A banal existence is anything but when one experiences non-coincidental coincidences that put life into death and meaning into meaninglessness. When it happens - when a person is addressed by something outside one's self - one can't help but stop, suddenly aware, and whisper, "Wait a second. What are the chances? Something funny is happening here."
