Berlin and Munich are the strongholds for filmmakers in Germany. The film industries of the two cities are in open competition with each other. While Munich was the undisputed film capital of Germany during and after the period of German division, Berlin has become a powerful competitor in the race for supremacy in the German film industry over the last two decades. This rivalry harks back to the early days of German cinema. In order to be prepared for the future, it is therefore important to analyse this early period of film in detail and learn the necessary lessons from it. Holger Wohlfahrt develops such an analysis in a concise and succinct form, offering all kinds of fascinating details about the emergence of cinema in Germany along the way.
