Gracey was negative and full of complaints, which caused her classmates to avoid her. Her parents tried to help by placing positive-message stickers around the house, but Gracey still found fault in everything.
One Saturday at a water park, Gracey stood aside while her cousins laughed and played. Listening to their joy made her realise she didn't like the way she felt or behaved.
When she learned her aunt would leave her two-year-old cousin, Beni, in her care, Gracey immediately imagined everything that could go wrong, and she felt very angry. She was confused about her feelings; how could she be mad over something that had not happened yet?
While reading the stickers on her bookshelf, Gracey suddenly understood that her thoughts were causing her unhappiness. She decided to stop letting negative thoughts control her emotions and wrote her own reminder: "I'm thinking happy thoughts." For the first time, the stickers around the house made sense.
When Beni arrived, he was messy and stubborn, but Gracey stayed patient. She cleaned up without complaining, played with him, and soon they were having a good time. Reading to him helped her discover a love for acting and inspired her to join the drama club.
On Monday, Gracey surprised everyone at school with her cheerful attitude. She even tried new things at school that she previously thought she hated and discovered she actually enjoyed them.
From then on, Gracey chose to examine her thoughts and replace negativity with positivity, living by her new motto: "I am in charge of my happiness."
