Occupational Psychosis(TM) emerged from a longer body of inquiry into identity, liminality, adaptation, narrative, and the conditions through which human beings become who they are. Georgia Lee Arts's earlier work explored identity disruption and the ways language, story, social environments, and inherited structures shape human becoming. Over time, that inquiry moved outward-from the individual, to the role, to the institution, and ultimately to the systems surrounding them. That progression led to a different question: What if it isn't the person? Burnout. Disengagement. Leadership failure. Moral injury. Workplace conflict. Declining well-being. Occupational wellness has developed an expanding vocabulary for what happens to people at work. But what if some of what we repeatedly attempt to correct within individuals cannot be fully understood without examining the structures in which they live and work? What if burnout is not the root cause? Occupational Psychosis: The Hidden Crisis Beneath Occupational Wellness is Georgia Lee Arts's foundational work defining Occupational Psychosis(TM) as a non-clinical, role-induced phenomenon and establishing a broader field of inquiry into occupational systems, power, authority, institutional distortion, identity, ethical judgment, accountability, and occupational harm. Rather than locating dysfunction solely within individuals, Occupational Psychosis changes the level of inquiry. It examines how occupational roles, authority, hierarchy, incentives, professional legitimacy, identity, institutional narratives, recognition, and accountability can interact to shape perception, constrain reflexivity, normalize ethical drift, and alter what individuals and institutions recognize as harmful. What is breaking occupational wellness? The book examines the blind spots of contemporary wellness and what happens when systems respond to visible outcomes while the conditions generating them remain unnamed or institutionally protected. It considers the cost of not naming what existing language cannot adequately hold. Its inquiry extends across corporate, governmental, healthcare, nonprofit, religious, professional, entrepreneurial, and other occupational systems where role, identity, legitimacy, expertise, influence, and power shape occupational reality. The purpose is not to declare people, professions, or institutions pathological. Occupational Psychosis does not diagnose individuals or professions and is not a clinical diagnostic manual, self-help book, wellness program, certification system, or intervention guide. Volume I is intentionally definitional. It establishes language, boundaries, distinctions, and a foundation for responsible inquiry. Because naming carries consequences. What remains unnamed can remain invisible. What remains invisible can evade accountability. When occupational wellness lacks the language or governance to recognize the structures undermining it, efforts intended to produce wellness may leave the source of harm untouched. And the questions extend beyond occupational wellness. If structures can shape identity, perception, behavior, belonging, and human relationships, examining them raises larger questions about what societies inherit, what institutions normalize, and what kinds of human systems we intentionally build. What kinds of structures might allow human beings to live, work, differ, and coexist without continually reproducing harm? Occupational Psychosis begins there.
