Food insecurity is a major problem in the hinterland of the city of Kananga. This study aimed to identify the explanatory factors as well as the prevalence of food insecurity among households in this environment. A descriptive observational study with an analytical purpose was conducted through a cross-sectional survey of 394 heads of households, using a questionnaire. Descriptive and analytical analyses were performed. The results reveal a prevalence of 81.7% of food-insecure households in the health zone studied. The bivariate analysis highlighted several determinants: sociodemographic (age, level of education, marital status, religious denomination, household size), socioeconomic (occupation, source of income, daily expenses, meal frequency, food availability), and dietary (source of supply, type of food consumed). Among individual factors, only food taboos were found to be significant. This study thus highlights the scale of the phenomenon and the need for appropriate interventions.
