This study, which seeks to examine the actual contribution of various financial actors to the agricultural sector in South Kivu in terms of agricultural credit and state subsidies to farmers to combat poverty and hunger, as well as effective strategies for financing the agricultural sector in South Kivu, has put forward the following hypotheses: (1) The volume of funding allocated to the agricultural sector in South Kivu in terms of public subsidies and credit from various financial actors is very low to combat poverty and hunger in South Kivu; (2) Contract farming constitutes an appropriate strategy for financing the agricultural sector in South Kivu. Organising the agricultural produce market in such a way as to enable smallholder farmers to produce in sufficient quantity and quality, but above all to sell, immediately upon harvest, at a price that is, if not exactly the same as, then close to that of the lean season, whilst being paid in advance, requires the integration of the multi-stakeholder model of contract farming into the agricultural sector's financing framework.
