There is a real dearth of female voices that speak directly to us from the third century BC, the extraordinary time that saw a new city, Alexandria, and a court ruled by Macedonian queens strictly tied to an emergent kind of poetry that, albeit mostly male-authored, is imbued with the voice of the Archaic poet Sappho. Yet epigram, because of its small size and chiseled diction, was probably considered – according to the standards and prejudices of ancient Greek culture – adequate to the expression of female feeling. It is therefore not so surprising that, among the many epigram authors of the period, three women appear: Anyte of Tegea, Moero of Byzantium, and Nossis of Epizephyrean Locri. It is a small, yet varied and intriguing collection of poems, some of them almost competing with those of male poets on the same topics, other apparently aiming at modelling a literary female persona. This volume offers is a new critical edition with introduction, English translation, and detailed literary and philological commentary of the epigrams of these three women, considered in the light of both the evolving new tradition of literary epigram, and their respective recollections of earlier female poetry, especially Sappho.
