Terrorism’s Evolving Threat Learning from Global Attacks to Shape Future Security

Dr. Maria (Maki) Haberfeld is a Professor of Police Science, at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City and Chair of the department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration. She holds a PhD in Criminal Justice from City University of New York. She has just completed a leave of absence from John Jay College and served as Assistant Commissioner for Professional Development for the New York City Police Department. She is one of the co-creators of Police Leadership Program for the NYPD sworn officers and the Academic Director of this program since its creation in 2001. Professor Haberfeld has trained police forces around the country and the world including, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, India, China, Cyprus, Turkey, Mongolia, Taiwan, Kazakhstan and conducted research in over 70 police departments in the US and 35 countries. Dr. Haberfeld also developed and trained some units of the US Military forces, including the U.S. Marines. She has published 25 academic books (authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited) on policing and over 50 book chapters and journal articles in peer reviewed publications. Her books were translated into 3 languages and are used by police departments around the country and around the world.

Michael C. Walker , retired Police Captain and former Director of the Paterson Police Academy, holds degrees in Criminal Justice Administration and Business Administration from William Paterson University, an MPA from John Jay College, and an MBA from Pace University. He is a Certified Public Manager and graduate of the FBI National Academy. Walker served as Paterson’s Police Director (2004–2008) and as an FBI CJIS Advisory Policy Board member, recognized as a subject matter expert in crime statistics and police use of force. His research spans police leadership, training, counter-terrorism, and economic correlates of crime. He has authored multiple FBI reports and chapters on terrorism and maritime security, and edited texts on policing and government finance. Currently, he chairs the Criminal Justice, Education, Human Services & Technical Studies Department at Passaic County Community College.
