In "The Economics of Hypoxia", economist Dennis Shen investigates the relationship between oxygen depletion and fisheries production specifically in the Mediterranean and Black seas. Drawing on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean as well as the World Resources Institute, the study develops an empirical framework for assessing how hypoxic marine conditions may influence the productivity of fisheries.
The findings indicate that hypoxia is associated with significant declines in fish catch and has an even greater effect on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and bivalves. The research furthermore explores if such declines result from the migration of sea dwellers or instead from widespread mortality and examines the broader economic consequences for fisheries, coastal communities and marine resource management.
Beyond presenting statistical evidence, the evaluation highlights the growing importance of integrating economics with environmental science for addressing challenges for the seas, and discusses the policy implications of nutrient pollution, habitat degradation and sustainable fisheries management.
The work offers valuable insights for economists, environmental researchers, policymakers, students, and others interested in marine conservation, marine economics and the economic effects of environmental change, while contributing to a growing body of interdisciplinary research seeking practical solutions for the long-term sustainability of our oceans.
