When a sculpted face looks flat or an animal head feels lifeless, the problem is rarely a lack of detail. It is usually the structure underneath. Fully revised and expanded, this Second Edition of Sculpting Faces and Animals in Clay features upgraded realistic illustrations, refined anatomical breakdowns, and hands-on studio solutions. It teaches you to see and build the forms that make a sculpture believable: skull mass, facial planes, landmarks, eye sockets, lids, muzzles, expression, asymmetry, and directional texture. Clear explanations, diagnostic checks, studio drills, and repair cards help you recognize what is wrong, correct it without panic, and make stronger decisions from every viewing angle.
Inside this updated edition you will learn how to:- Construct a solid head before adding surface details
- Place features accurately with practical landmark relationships
- Create a focused gaze and highly readable expressions
- Compare dog, cat, and horse head structures side by side
- Use fur, scales, and feathers to reinforce underlying form
- Rescue common errors like flat faces, pasted-on noses, and stiff muzzles Designed as a rugged, hands-on studio companion,
this guide helps developing sculptors replace guesswork with structural observation, troubleshooting skills, and repeatable practice.
