The Yellow Wallpaper is Charlotte Perkins Gilman's most famous work and a landmark of American Gothic and feminist literature. Its narrator has been prescribed complete rest by her physician husband and forbidden intellectual work of any kind. Confined to an upstairs nursery, she secretly continues to write while becoming increasingly absorbed by the room's grotesque yellow wallpaper. What first appears merely ugly gradually reveals a disturbing pattern-and the figure of a woman behind it. With remarkable economy, Gilman combines psychological suspense with a critique of medical authority, domestic confinement, and the limited freedom afforded to women in the nineteenth century. This edition is complemented by Why I Wrote The Yellow Wall-Paper, in which Gilman explains the autobiographical experience that led her to write the story. First published in 1892. This is the English-language paperback edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's famous and enduring short story. Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The Yellow Wallpaper. With "Why I Wrote The Yellow Wall-Paper," the Author's Own Afterword. The Yellow Wallpaper was first published in The New England Magazine in January 1892. This edition follows The Yellow Wall Paper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, published by Small, Maynard and Company, Boston, in 1901. "Why I Wrote The Yellow Wall-Paper" was first published in The Forerunner in October 1913. New edition, Göttingen 2026.
