This book is the culmination of a journey into the origins and history of my surname, which began more than fifty years ago in the school library of Melville College, Edinburgh. For too long, the Hallidays of Annandale have been overlooked in Scottish history, their story obscured by a supposed 'history' that can now be shown to be largely the creation of nineteenth-century Romantic writers and antiquarians. Using primary sources, this book establishes the Hallidays' roots in Dumfriesshire and examines their part in the Wars of Independence, Border strife, Reiving, and the 'Killing Time' of the Covenanters. Their story is then brought into the modern era through heraldry, contemporary DNA evidence, and archive records not previously published.Halliday of Annandale - minus the fiction.
