Requests are polite or formal ways of getting the addressee to do something that they might not have done without being asked. In present-day English, the courtesy request marker please and phrases such as could you, can you and would you are often used for this purpose. This Element traces the long diachrony of such modifiers along two trajectories, both reaching back to Late Middle English. One trajectory starts with explicit performatives such as I pray you and I beseech you and eventually pragmaticalises into pray. It frames the speaker as a supplicant. The other is based on please phrases (e.g. if it liketh you or if you please) and frames the request as non-imposing. The two trajectories co-existed for many centuries until the nineteenth century, when please pragmaticalised and, together with conventional indirect requests, ousted all supplicative forms and established today's culture of non-imposition politeness.
