Year: December 1628, in the weeks following the surrender of La Rochelle.
Paris, December 1628. The siege of La Rochelle has ended, but the French capital remains troubled by political rivalries, concealed ambitions, and memories of old betrayals. Near the Cemetery of the Holy Innocents stands the Inn of the Three Roses, a centuries-old establishment frequented by noblemen, gamblers, foreign visitors, and mysterious strangers. Its gloomy corridors, neglected rooms, and sinister reputation conceal a past that few are willing to discuss.
When D'Artagnan receives an anonymous letter warning that the shadow of a man unjustly hanged twenty years earlier has returned to claim vengeance, he initially suspects an elaborate deception. Yet the letter's disturbing details awaken painful memories in Athos, suggesting that the threat may be connected to events long buried in the violent history of the Flemish wars.
Acting on Monsieur de Tréville's instructions, D'Artagnan and his companions, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, discreetly enter the inn to investigate. They encounter Virgilio de Montreuil, its financially troubled proprietor; his formidable wife, Madame Marie; Charles de Comières, a reckless nobleman threatened with ruin; Wilhelm Engel, a scarred German mercenary haunted by his past; and Douglas de Langley, a young Englishman possessing documents capable of transforming several lives.
The investigation takes a terrifying turn when Langley is discovered hanging from a beam in a deserted upper passage. Circumstances surrounding his death appear impossible, while unsettling testimonies suggest that someone may have seen him alive at a time when he should already have been dead.
As fear spreads through the inn, strange manifestations multiply. Unexplained footsteps disturb the darkness, mysterious figures appear and vanish, and the three roses painted on the inn's sign begin turning black, seemingly fulfilling the ominous prophecy.
The arrival of Charles's three sisters, the appearance of a mysterious English widow, and the discovery of disturbing evidence connected to an ancient inheritance further complicate the investigation. An apparently inaccessible room, forgotten family papers, enigmatic dolls, and concealed architectural features suggest that the building itself possesses an extraordinary capacity to protect secrets.
While the authorities struggle to distinguish superstition from criminal calculation, the four Musketeers follow different investigative paths. D'Artagnan pursues inconsistencies in testimony, Aramis examines religious and legal records, Porthos searches for practical evidence, and Athos confronts memories he has spent years attempting to forget.
Gradually, the mystery expands beyond the boundaries of the inn, reaching into the political corruption, stolen fortunes, and ruined reputations of an earlier generation.
With each new discovery, the distinction between justice and revenge becomes increasingly uncertain. The Musketeers must discover whether they are confronting an impossible return from the grave or an exceptionally cunning intelligence exploiting the deepest fears of the living.
