Cousin Phillis is a novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell that tells the story of Paul Manning, a young man who moves to the countryside to work on a railway project. While there, he meets his cousin Phillis Holman, a sweet and innocent girl who lives with her father on a farm. Paul becomes enamored with Phillis and spends much of his time with her, getting to know her and her family. However, as their relationship deepens, Paul begins to realize that Phillis is not as simple as she seems and that there are secrets in her past that she has been keeping from him. As the story unfolds, Paul must navigate his feelings for Phillis and the challenges that come with living in a small, close-knit community. Ultimately, Cousin Phillis is a tale of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships, set against the backdrop of rural England in the mid-19th century.I wish the minister had been within,' said his wife, rising too. Secretly I was very glad he was not. I did not take kindly to ministers in those days, and I thought he must be a particular kind of man, by his objecting to the term May-day. But before I went, cousin Holman made me promise that I would come back on the Saturday following and spend Sunday with them; when I should see something of 'the minister'.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
