Padre Ignacio or The Song of Temptation is a novel written by Owen Wister. The book tells the story of a young priest named Father Ignacio who is sent to a remote mission in the mountains of Mexico. The mission is run by a group of Franciscan monks who have been struggling to convert the local indigenous population to Christianity. Father Ignacio is a devout and idealistic young man who is determined to succeed where others have failed. However, he soon finds himself facing a series of challenges that test his faith and his commitment to his calling. The novel explores themes of faith, temptation, and the struggle between good and evil. Father Ignacio is constantly tempted by the beauty and sensuality of the world around him, particularly by a young woman named Juana who he meets in the village. As he grapples with his desire for her, he begins to question his faith and his ability to resist temptation. The book is set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, which adds a sense of danger and urgency to the story. The revolutionaries are a constant threat to the mission and the monks who run it, and Father Ignacio must navigate the complex political landscape of the time in order to protect his flock. Overall, Padre Ignacio or The Song of Temptation is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores the nature of faith, temptation, and the human struggle to do what is right. It is a must-read for anyone interested in religious themes and the complexities of human nature.1900. Wister, an American writer whose stories helped to establish the cowboy as an archetypical, individualist hero. The book begins: At Santa Ysabel del Mar the season was at one of those moments when the air rests quiet over land and sea. The old breezes were gone; the new ones were not yet risen. The flowers in the mission garden opened wide; no wind came by day or night to shake the loose petals from their stems. Along the basking, silent, many-colored shore gathered and lingered the crisp odors of the mountains.
