Jude the Obscure is a novel written by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1895. It tells the story of Jude Fawley, a poor stonemason who dreams of becoming a scholar at Christminster (a fictionalized version of Oxford University). However, his aspirations are thwarted by his lack of education and social status. Jude falls in love with his cousin, Sue Bridehead, who is also a dreamer and has unconventional views on love and marriage. They enter into a complex and tumultuous relationship, struggling against societal norms and their own personal demons. Throughout the novel, Hardy explores themes of class, education, religion, and gender roles. He also critiques the Victorian era's strict moral code and the limitations it placed on individuals. Jude the Obscure is considered one of Hardy's most controversial works, as it was met with public outrage for its frank depiction of sexuality and criticism of marriage. Despite this, it is also regarded as one of his most powerful and poignant novels, with its tragic ending leaving a lasting impact on readers.1895.
