This powerful and engaging book: - Features intimate portraits of working-class black youth along with many examples of their writing.- Analyzes schooling practices and student responses to those practices. For examples: How do students respond to the presence of metal detectors and police officers in their school? How do they feel about social promotion, the absence of college preparation, and decisions to reduce academic course loads?- Ties student writing to socioeconomic studies of school and community.- Demonstrates how the study of poetry reinforces the skills needed for the linear kinds of writing required in school.
