A History of Greek Literature: From the Earliest Period to the Death of Demosthemes is a comprehensive book written by Frank Byron Jevons in 1886. The book provides a detailed account of the development of Greek literature, from its earliest origins to the death of Demosthemes, a famous Greek orator and politician. The book covers a wide range of literary genres, including epic poetry, lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, history, and philosophy. Jevons explores the major themes and motifs of Greek literature, such as heroism, love, and the gods, and examines the contributions of notable Greek writers, such as Homer, Sophocles, and Plato. The book also delves into the historical and cultural context of Greek literature, discussing the political and social structures of ancient Greece, as well as the religious beliefs and practices that influenced Greek literature. Jevons provides a wealth of information on the literary traditions of ancient Greece, including the oral tradition of epic poetry, the development of the Greek alphabet, and the role of the theater in Greek culture.Overall, A History of Greek Literature is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history and development of Greek literature, providing a comprehensive overview of the major literary works and themes of ancient Greece. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
