A classic collection of comic golf stories from one of the great masters of English humour. First published in 1922, The Clicking of Cuthbert brings together a series of interlinked tales narrated by the "Oldest Member" of a golf club, whose storytelling turns everyday matches into memorable dramas of pride, rivalry, and eccentricity.
At the center of the collection is Cuthbert Banks, whose peculiar habit of "clicking" his clubs becomes both a comic signature and a symbol of the strange rituals that define the game. Around him gathers a cast of determined amateurs, romantic hopefuls, and quietly competitive players, each drawn into situations where small moments on the course take on outsized importance.
Wodehouse's precision, timing, and effortless wit are on full display throughout. Beyond the humor, these stories offer a vivid glimpse into early twentieth-century leisure culture, capturing both the charm and absurdity of the golfing world. The Clicking of Cuthbert remains one of Wodehouse's most distinctive early collections and a lasting favorite among readers of classic comic fiction.
