An early school story by P. G. Wodehouse, set within the traditions of the English public school and centred on rivalry, honour, and youthful intrigue.
The Pothunters, Wodehouse's first published novel, presents a narrative rooted in the conventions of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century school fiction. Set at St Austin's, the story follows a group of boys whose discovery of ancient artefacts-"pothunting"-intersects with a series of disciplinary and competitive tensions within the school. The plot develops through misunderstandings, loyalties, and the gradual restoration of order, reflecting the moral framework typical of the genre.
Although distinct in tone from Wodehouse's later comic masterpieces, the novel reveals early evidence of his clarity of style and narrative control. Its setting and structure place it within the lineage of British school stories, while offering a straightforward and engaging account of institutional life. The Pothunters remains of interest both as a period work and as the starting point of one of the most recognisable literary careers of the twentieth century.
