Morley Callaghan, who crafted narratives that delve into universal themes of love, conflict, and morality, often set against the backdrop of Canadian society, left an indelible mark through his compelling exploration of human nature and societal constraints. And thirty-five years after his death (2025 Edition), his succinct and direct storytelling style remains a touchstone for exploring personal beliefs, societal structures, and the complexities of human relationships.
The Complete Stories is a four-volume set of ninety-seven short fictions, introduced by Alistair MacLeod, André Alexis, Anne Michaels, and Margaret Atwood, and finished with sections Dates of Original Publication, Questions for Discussion and Essays, Selected Related Reading, Editor's Endnotes, An Exchange of Letters and a Letter Discovered, and Photographs/Archival.
The New York Times said, recognizing Callaghan as being one of the singular storytellers of his or any time: "If there is a better storyteller in the world we don't know where he is."
"The Complete Stories, attractively produced in four volumes...is nothing if not ambitious [and provides for] the definitive edition." --Books in Canada
