Globalization, Culture, and Development The UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity

“This volume of critical essays offers a well-researched commentary and a fairly trenchant critique on the formulation, application and future viability of the 2005 UN Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions. … this volume is essential reading, and as I have indicated, generates some of the most pressing challenges for cultural policy-making on many levels as much as research.” (Jonathan Vickery, Cultural Trends, April, 2016)

'The contributions in this excellently edited and well-balanced collection help foreground and analyze the essential issues and stakes of the often very complex relationships between local, regional, national, international and world culture, from a cultural-political point of view.' - Jan Baetens, University of Leuven, Belgium

'This book brings together a range of papers written by experts in the field who provide a critical appraisal of various aspects of the Convention's operations and speculate about the prospects for its future. The differing perspectives of the authors are sure to stimulate debate about the Convention's strengths and weaknesses.' - David Throsby, Macquarie University, Australia

'By focusing on the impact of the UNESCO Convention, this important collection offers valuable insights on the challenges of translating the contested, but widely used, concepts of culture and diversity into public policy and action, and pathways for making those links more effective.' - Vijayendra Rao,The World Bank
