A comic play of classical Athens in which Dionysus undertakes a journey to the underworld, combining satire, literary debate, and theatrical invention. The narrative follows the god's descent in search of a great tragedian, using the journey as a framework for examining the nature and purpose of dramatic art. Aristophanes develops the play through a mixture of parody, choral performance, and direct engagement with contemporary cultural concerns. The central contest between tragedians serves as both entertainment and critique, reflecting on the role of poetry and the standards by which it is judged. The structure allows for shifts between humour and more pointed commentary on artistic and civic life. Positioned within the tradition of Old Comedy, The Frogs remains one of Aristophanes' most studied works for its treatment of literature and performance. It provides insight into the theatrical culture of Athens while preserving the characteristic wit and formal experimentation of classical Greek comedy.
