Seven men. One republic unravelling. Power always carries a price. In this historical biography collection, Charles Oman traces the late Roman republic through seven vivid, sharp portraits of Roman republican statesmen: the Gracchi, Sulla, Crassus, Cato, Pompey, and Caesar. These classical history essays move briskly from reform to reaction, from uneasy compromise to civil war, showing how ancient Rome politics turned personal ambition into public crisis. Read as a sequence, the lives illuminate the machinery of the Senate and the street, the hard logic of patronage and army loyalty, and the Roman political rivalries that accelerated the fall of the Roman Republic. Oman writes with the judgement of a great narrative historian, offering a classical studies reference that still rewards modern readers. The approach echoes the fascination of Plutarch Parallel Lives, yet keeps an eye on institutions, strategy, and consequence, making it equally satisfying beside Julius Caesar biographies or as Roman history for students seeking a strong overview of republican character and collapse. First published in the age of Victorian scholarship, it remains one of the most readable guides to the late Roman Republic in English, balancing drama with disciplined analysis and keen moral sense. An unabridged classic edition that belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants Rome's last century explained with force and restraint. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
