""Notes On Souldern, Oxon: From The Earliest Period To The Present Time"" is a historical account of the village of Souldern in Oxfordshire, England. Written by John Hill Gough and originally published in 1882, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the village's history from its earliest known records up to the time of publication. The book is divided into several chapters, each focusing on a different period in Souldern's history. Gough begins by discussing the village's prehistoric origins, including the discovery of stone tools and other artifacts in the area. He then moves on to cover the Roman occupation of the region, including the construction of nearby roads and the establishment of a Roman villa in Souldern itself.Subsequent chapters cover the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods, including the construction of the village church and the development of the local economy. Gough also discusses the impact of the English Civil War on the village and the subsequent restoration of the monarchy. The book concludes with a detailed account of Souldern's modern history, including the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the growth of the village's population. Gough also provides information on notable residents of Souldern, including local landowners and prominent figures in the church.Overall, ""Notes On Souldern, Oxon: From The Earliest Period To The Present Time"" provides a fascinating look at the history of a small English village over the course of several centuries. Gough's careful research and detailed descriptions make this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of Oxfordshire or rural England more broadly. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
