On a single March day in 1856, Pennsylvania Democrats gathered in Harrisburg to define their cause and choose their course for a nation on edge. Politics, spoken loud and raw. Proceedings Of The Pennsylvania Democratic State Convention, Held At Harrisburg, March 4Th, 1856 captures the atmosphere of the hall and the machinery of party power at work, before the Civil War transformed American life. Edited by James B. Sheridan, this primary source collection brings together the state convention proceedings and political convention speeches that shaped democratic party platforms in the 1850s United States. Read as a complete convention record, it reveals how the Pennsylvania Democratic Party argued over policy, leadership, and the stakes of 1856 election politics, linking local loyalties to national battles. For political history research, the volume offers names, places, and procedural detail; for genealogy and local history, it is a rich trace of delegates and communities, anchored in Harrisburg Pennsylvania history. It also illuminates how regional interests and national tensions met on the convention floor that day. Historically, such documents sit at the crossroads of antebellum American politics and modern campaigning, showing how platforms were forged in public, not retrospect. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Whether you are building a library of American political documents or simply want an unfiltered window into party life, this edition rewards both curious readers and classic-history collectors.
