Founded in 1630, Boston's First Church stood at the heart of New England's spiritual experiment, shaping the conscience of a colony and a nation. History lives in these pages. William Emerson's An Historical Sketch of the First Church in Boston blends concise church history with a moving historical sermon collection, tracing the congregation from its Puritan beginnings to the threshold of the nineteenth century. Emerson - distinguished pastor and heir to the tradition of New England Puritanism - gathers portraits of ministers, controversies and revivals, setting first church boston history alongside the wider story of colonial boston religion and early american congregationalism. At its close stand two companion sermons, preached as the congregation left its venerable meeting-house and entered a new house of worship, meditations that capture both the grief of parting and the hope of renewal. For church history students, pastors and theology scholars, and thoughtful lay readers, this is a richly textured window into congregational church origins, resonant with the voices that would later inform works like Cotton Mather's Magnalia and the great Jonathan Edwards sermons. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. This historical reprint edition brings a classic church history book back into circulation for readers, researchers and collectors of American religious history, a finely judged choice for any serious library of theology, New England studies or classic literature.
