Charles Duke Yonge's *The Constitutional History of England from 1760 to 1860* surveys a century of British political development, beginning with George III's accession and tracing the changing relations among Crown, Parliament, ministers, and electorate. Its narrative encompasses parliamentary contests, royal influence, cabinet government, party realignment, Catholic emancipation, the Reform Acts, and the gradual enlargement of representative politics. Written in a lucid, documentary, and strongly chronological manner, the work belongs to the Victorian tradition of constitutional history, combining institutional analysis with political narrative and moral judgment. It presents constitutional change not as sudden rupture, but as an accretion of precedents, conflicts, and practical adjustments within the British system. Yonge (1812-1891) was an English historian, classical scholar, schoolmaster, and prolific author whose career was shaped by deep engagement with the teaching and interpretation of British history. His Tory sympathies and admiration for the continuity of the English constitution inform the book's emphasis on stability, parliamentary tradition, and the Crown's historical role. Writing after the major nineteenth-century reforms, he sought to explain how modern representative government had emerged from earlier institutions and political struggles. This volume is recommended to readers seeking a substantial Victorian account of Britain's constitutional evolution, especially those interested in the interaction of political ideas, personalities, and institutions. Though its judgments reflect its period, that perspective makes it valuable both as history and as evidence of nineteenth-century thinking about parliamentary government.
