The book gave me an insight into the transition times from early colonialism and slave trade to the Industrial Revolution and the birth of liberal societies through a brilliant parade of characters, moving in different social layers. A case study from which one draws parallels to current issues of social and political behaviour and trends, which are as astonishing as deeply worrying.
