Das Buch ist auf eine sehr verstörende Art packend. Der Schreibstil verleiht dem ganzen eine skurile Note. Selbst nach Abschluss des Buches lässt es einen einfach nicht los. Es regt den Drang an, über jede einzelne Seite reden zu wollen und es wieder und wieder zu lesen, in der Hoffnung, dass sich Lücken füllen, nur um festzustellen, dass genau diese Lücken das Buch noch besser machen

I absolutely love this book!!! The tale is simple but chilling, the characters psychologically super interesting and the plot has a feministic touch. I will definitely read this again and highly recommend this book to everyone. It is also relatively easy to read in English for people who want to practice their second language!

A great one for the spooky season!

I love reading about peculiar, headstrong, maybe not quite sane protagonists. And that it is exactly what We Have Always Lived in the Castle has to offer. In this book we see the world through the eyes of Merricat Blackwood. She is an extremely fascinating character driven by a childlike logic and an immense love for her sister, Constance. This turns out to be a dangerous combination. During the book we see Merricat deal with living alone with her sister and her disabled uncle, the villagers’ hostility towards all of them, and an intruder who threatens to disturb their routines. Her actions often surprised me and I could never predict where the book was headed. The unique characters combined with Jackson’s brilliant writing make for a wonderfully eerie reading experience.

gloomy and uncanny

Shirley Jackson definitely knows how to write atmosphere. Her writing is very gloomy and uncanny but in a cozy way? The Blackwoods are an interesting group of characters, weird but very lovable. The main character, Merricat, reminded me a lot of Wednesday Addams due to her thoughts and behaviors. I loved her quite a bit. I want to read all of Shirley Jackson's work now. :D
