Thomas Tusser's Fiue Hundred Pointes of Good Husbandrie is a singular fusion of agricultural manual, moral instruction, and Tudor verse. Written in memorable rhyming couplets and arranged around the farming year, it offers advice on ploughing, planting, livestock, household management, thrift, and seasonal labour. Its plain, proverbial style places it within the didactic literature of the sixteenth century, yet its vivid attention to rural practice gives it unusual documentary value as a portrait of Elizabethan husbandry and domestic economy. Tusser himself was well fitted to compose such a work. Born in Essex around 1524, educated at Eton and Cambridge, and trained also in music, he moved between learned culture and practical rural life. His own uneven fortunes as a farmer, tenant, and observer of country customs seem to have sharpened his interest in prudence, discipline, and the moral obligations of household governance. This book is recommended to readers interested in early modern England, agricultural history, proverbial wisdom, or the literature of everyday life. It rewards attention not as a mere relic, but as a lively and carefully shaped guide to work, order, and survival in a changing rural world.
