Orley Farm (1862) is one of Anthony Trollope's most searching studies of law, inheritance, and moral ambiguity. Centered on Lady Mason, whose claim to an estate rests upon a disputed codicil, the novel unfolds as both a legal mystery and a domestic social panorama. Trollope's characteristic realism-patient, ironic, and psychologically exact-places courtroom procedure beside drawing-room conscience, exposing the uneasy Victorian entanglement of property, class, gender, and reputation. Published in the age of sensation fiction yet rooted in the ethical breadth of the realist tradition, it transforms melodramatic materials into a grave inquiry into guilt, sympathy, and justice. Trollope, long employed by the Post Office and deeply observant of institutional life, brought to fiction an administrator's knowledge of bureaucracy and a moralist's fascination with compromise. His experience of Victorian professional society, together with his prolific discipline and interest in legal and parliamentary systems, informs the novel's intricate handling of evidence, advocacy, and public opinion. Readers who value expansive nineteenth-century fiction will find Orley Farm richly rewarding: a humane, intellectually subtle novel that asks not merely what is legal, but what is right.
