The book "The Sexual Question" is a large-scale and bold study of the fundamental aspects of human life: sexuality, marriage, morality and their impact on mental and physical health. Written by the Swiss doctor, psychiatrist and educator August Forel at the beginning of the 20th century, this work was one of the first attempts to consider the intimate aspects of being not from the standpoint of morality or religion, but from the point of view of science, social hygiene and common sense.
Forel raises a wide range of topics: from the physiology and psychology of sexual desire to issues of prostitution, marriage, abstinence, education and women's rights. He openly discusses acute and taboo issues, argues with church and bourgeois dogmas, calls for reforms in marriage law and sex education. Many of the author's views may seem outdated or controversial today, such as the ideas of eugenics or the notion of "normal" behavior. However, this book remains an important historical document: it reflects the moment when issues of sexuality were first discussed openly and without prejudice. "The Sexual Question" is not just a medical study, but a work that captures the clash of science and traditional foundations. This publication will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of medicine, the evolution of social ideas about the body, morality and human freedom.
