"The Springfield Church Survey" is a pioneering sociological investigation into the role and influence of organized religion within the framework of its social environment. Authored by Harlan Paul Douglass, a leading figure in religious research during the early 20th century, this study provides a meticulous examination of how spiritual institutions interact with the demographic and economic shifts of a burgeoning urban landscape.
The work focuses on the social background of congregations, analyzing how factors such as geography, community structure, and social trends impact the vitality and mission of various denominations. By applying scientific methods to the study of the church, Douglass offers a comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities facing religious organizations in a modernizing world. This book serves as a vital historical and sociological document, offering deep insights into the evolution of urban religious life and the development of the sociology of religion as a formal discipline.
Scholars and readers interested in American religious history, community development, and the intersection of faith and society will find this work an indispensable resource for understanding the complex dynamics of institutional religion in the early 1900s.
