Getting hired as a peace officer is about far more than passing a written test.
From the first application to the final hiring decision, candidates face a demanding selection process designed to evaluate judgment, integrity, preparation, consistency, and suitability for a career in law enforcement.
Passing the Background takes you through that process stage by stage-from the perspective of a veteran peace officer, recruiter, CVSA examiner, and background investigator who has spent decades working in and around law-enforcement hiring.
This comprehensive guide explains what applicants can expect during:
- Recruiting and the pre-application stage
- Physical ability testing
- Written examinations
- Oral board interviews
- The Personal History Statement (PHS)
- Background investigations and reference checks
- Polygraph and CVSA examinations
- Psychological evaluations
- Medical examinations and drug screening
- Final review and conditional selection
- The academy, field training, and probation
You'll also learn where applicants commonly create unnecessary problems for themselves, how investigators evaluate discrepancies and omissions, how to prepare before the process begins, and why honesty and consistency matter throughout the investigation.
The book also includes practical applicant checklists and preparation tools designed to help you organize your history, documents, references, employment information, residences, and other information before an investigator asks for it.
This is not a guide to beating, manipulating, or gaming the background process. It is a guide to understanding it, preparing for it, and presenting your history honestly, completely, and professionally.
Whether you're preparing to apply for your first peace-officer position or you're already somewhere in the hiring process, Passing the Background will help you understand what comes next-and prepare for it with confidence.
Independent educational resource. Hiring standards and procedures vary by agency and jurisdiction. The requirements of the hiring agency and applicable state licensing or POST authority always control.
