Sixteen bikers. One reckless summer weekend. One small New York town that will never forget them. It is the mid-1980s, and Mack Mercer and fifteen of his closest friends are heading north toward Boonville, New York, for the Woodsmen's Field Days with motorcycles, bad attitudes, questionable judgment, and enough beer-fueled confidence to convince themselves they are still twenty-five. They are not. What begins as a wild weekend of lumberjack contests, bars, motorcycles, women, practical jokes, filthy stories, fistfights, and spectacularly bad decisions quickly turns into the kind of disaster people will still be talking about years later. These men do not simply visit Boonville. They descend on it. There is Rocco, the foul-mouthed philosopher who gives relationship advice nobody should ever follow. Danny, the handsome lifelong player who likes Paula, wants Roberta, and discovers over a stack of pancakes that freedom and loneliness are not the same thing. Bones still believes his fists can solve anything. Cal will gamble on almost anything that moves. Wheels refuses to admit he is getting older. Moose looks terrifying but cannot pass an injured animal without stopping. Radio never shuts up because silence brings back memories he would rather bury. Bobby is hiding unemployment from his family. Lou has spent his life burying everyone except the grief he carries himself. And the rest of the sixteen are carrying secrets of their own. Then the weekend goes too far. A wrecked porch puts sixteen drunken bikers face-to-face with Nell Kavanagh, a seventy-nine-year-old woman who has absolutely no intention of being intimidated by them. Instead of calling the police, Nell orders them to sit down. Then she tells them a story. It is the unbelievable story of another group of sixteen troubled young men from decades earlier-men who drank too much, fought too hard, frightened people, and believed the worst things they had survived gave them permission to become the worst versions of themselves. Until one night changed everything. What Nell reveals about sacrifice, loss, anonymous kindness, and the man everyone once dismissed as worthless hits the bikers harder than any punch they have ever taken. She leaves them with one truth they cannot escape: The worst thing you have done does not have to become your entire story. What follows is not an overnight miracle. It is harder than that. Each man must return home and face the person he has been avoiding: a daughter, a wife, a son, a brother, a grave, an addiction, a lie, a memory, or himself. Some relationships can be repaired. Some cannot. Some apologies come too late. Some have to be made more than once. And Danny still has Paula and Roberta waiting somewhere beyond Boonville. 16 Guys, Boonville and a Bad Idea is a raunchy, funny, emotional road novel about motorcycles, male friendship, regret, aging, love, second chances, and the strange people who sometimes enter our lives at exactly the moment we are finally ready to hear what they have to say. Inspired by a true ride and a true summer story, this is a story about sixteen men who rode into Boonville looking for one hell of a weekend-and rode home wondering whether they still had time to become better men.
