TWELVE MEDIEVAL PORTIONS: A Structural History of the Medieval World in Twelve Poems presents medieval history as a problem of structural coherence: How can a system remain coherent when authority is distributed among competing structures? Across twelve short poems, J. A. Gucci examines the overlapping forms of authority that shaped medieval life, including landed obligation, sworn loyalty, monastic discipline, customary law, religious economies, craft guilds, pilgrimage, textual commentary, fortification, demographic scarcity, urban association, and institutional reorganization. The collection is arranged in three movements-Binding, Mediation, and Reformation. Binding considers how durable relations are established. Mediation examines the structures through which materials, persons, obligations, and knowledge remain operative while passing through intermediary conditions. Reformation considers what happens when established relations encounter pressures that prevent them from continuing in their existing form. Each poem places a medieval historical system in structural correspondence with an independently observable physical process drawn from the culinary arts. These processes are not reconstructions of medieval cooking, nor do they function as symbols for historical institutions. Instead, the historical and physical systems remain independent and meet through compatible observable behaviors: containing, binding, regulating, transferring, separating, resisting, fragmenting, recombining, and persisting. The poems are composed using Absolute Composition, a structural method developed by J. A. Gucci. Rather than beginning with symbolic equivalence, Absolute Composition begins with observable behavior and examines how systems operate under conditions of pressure, threshold, transformation, and compression. Meaning is not supplied through a predetermined symbolic code; the architecture of each poem makes structural relations available for examination while leaving their interpretive consequences open. This Instructor Edition expands the collection with teaching materials for each of the twelve poems. Each portion is accompanied by sections addressing the Physical System, Medieval System, Structural Correspondence, Absolute Composition, and Discussion. These materials establish the relevant physical processes, provide historically qualified contexts, examine the behaviors shared by otherwise independent systems, identify compositional operations, and offer questions designed to return attention to the structure of the poems rather than prescribe a single interpretation. Three appendices further document the collection's architecture through empirical and technical frameworks, compositional mechanisms, and a taxonomy of the twelve paradox triads and their system mappings. A glossary defines the central vocabulary of Absolute Composition, including behavior, compression, correspondence, threshold, transformation, Structural Zeugma, Observable Integrity, and white space. Designed for classroom examination without reducing poetry to historical illustration or a puzzle with predetermined solutions, TWELVE MEDIEVAL PORTIONS: Instructor Edition offers instructors and students a framework for investigating how historical structures form, interact, withstand pressure, fragment, reorganize, and continue-and how those behaviors can be composed in compressed poetic form. The description also reflects the book's explicit distinction that the culinary processes establish physical possibility rather than interpretation, and that the correspondence occurs through observable behavior rather than symbolic substitution.
